FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Michigan – September 9, 2021
After a year of pandemic shut down, a move to the historic Copeland building, and a summer of sold-out concerts, The Encore Musical Theatre Company is opening its doors with a new season of musicals.
“It has been such a joy to have our community coming together again inside our new creative hub,” says Artistic Director Dan Cooney. “Now we’re thrilled to be bringing a whole new season of musicals to life in The Maas, our stunning new performance space in downtown Dexter.”
Season 13 kicks off with the hit Broadway musical, SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE, featuring the music of Leiber and Stoller. This show, currently in rehearsal, is being directed by Cooney, himself a Broadway veteran, and choreographed by New York City’s “Mayor of Broadway,” Gerry McIntyre. Smokey Joe’s Café is sponsored by Judith Manocherian LLC, and Fred and Diane Schmid.
October brings ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE, sponsored by Jan Lyons, back to The Encore stage.
The new year welcomes back the Tony, Oscar and Emmy-Award-winning Tony Walton to design and direct GUYS AND DOLLS. Leading the cast are two Broadway veterans, Jessica Grové and Herman Sebek, as the comic duo of Adelaide and Nathan Detroit.
A THOUSAND FACES, the world premiere of a new musical about the life of silent film star, Lon Chaney, makes its debut this spring, and the season concludes next summer with the joyous MAMMA MIA!
Season 13 will also continue The Encore’s popular series of tribute concerts, with nods to Queen, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and Billy Joel. Several special events will also be included.
As with their highly successful Back to Broadway summer series, until further notice, The Encore will continue to operate under 50 percent capacity. The pandemic may have closed our doors last year but, according to Cooney, “The Encore is back now and better than ever!”
